St John's Wort

Our special of the month is St. John�s Wort, or Hypericum. We have an assortment of species at Recycled Gardens.

St. Johns Wort is a large and diverse genus of over 400 species, consisting of herbs, subshrubs, shrubs, and small trees. The plant is found mostly in the Northern Hemisphere.

One of the species we have is useful as a ground cover. It�s very hardy and grows in partial sun or shade and requires little water or maintenance. Showy bright yellow flowers appear in early summer.

Another species available is a small shrub with attractive variegated leaves that change color throughout the season. It blooms with a small bright flower, which later turns into a pretty black berry.

In Ancient Greece hypericum was hung above pictures to ward off evil sprits. In medieval times, St. Johns Wort was put under one�s pillow on St. John's Eve; St. John himself may even appear in a dream, blessing the dreamer for another year.

In modern times, St. Johns Wort has been studied as a treatment for depression. In addition, the oil has been used by herbalists for bruises, to speed healing of wounds, and to reduce inflammation. (Please use this herb only under the direction of a doctor).
